How to get to Mayfest and Augfest
|
In and Out of Character In character is often referred to as "IC" and out of character as "OC" or more often "OOC" While a player is playing a character they are said to be in character. While a person is not playing a character they are out of character. Events are also described this way, for example an IC event is fighting a battle and an OOC event could be booking in or handing in lost property. As described in the conventions, the calls "Time in!" and "Time out!" control the transition from one state to another. There are areas where players are always OOC. The GOD tent, monster equipping area and store and the toilets as well as all personal tents not marked "IC" or declared for the duration of an event, like a conversation, to be IC. Near the equipment store is an areawith some tents and shelters as well as a lot of chairs. This area remains OOC for the whole of Mayfest or Augfest and is an area where a person can relax OOC if they feel the need. Sometimes sitting for a while in a warm or shaded spot sipping on a cup of tea works wonders. It is an area where parents can look after children knowing they will not be overawed or confused by role play or frightened by monsters. (In practice we have found children understand pretend play better than adults and often feel they have to pretend to be frightened. Often this has confused their parents!) This area is available all through the festival and parents can camp there with their children if they wish. Anyone entering the area is straight away out of character and if playing a monster is expected to remove their mask as or before they enter the area. The game is IC from the opening ceremony to the closing one. Though there will be brief periods OOC these must be kept as short as possible. From midnight to 6am any faction area and the central fire pit area May be declared OOC. From dark until dawn there will be no fighting near tents or campfires, fences, logs and so on. If a combat situation arises it must be moved to a safe area to be resolved. |
