Fences, Barriers and Walls

One of the biggest bone of contentions and causes of frustration is the barriers around faction areas. Worse case these are represented by string suspended from sticks stuck into the ground.

When setting up a barrier bear a few points in mind. Put the fence where it is expected to be. Obviously it has to surround the faction area but line it up, where possible, with other factions' barriers. This helps stop folk running into it after dark. If possible use some form of lighting to show where it is. Have a clear wide gateway. It should be wide enough for a person to carry another through without bashing the gate posts. Do not have bits jutting out from the fence and do not have wood cutting areas just the other side of it.

Posts (or sticks) with a single strand of rope or string are simple fences that can be seen through and passed through. Except in an OOC emergency a character passing through such a fence must slow down and role play getting through rather than just ducking under or stepping over the string or rope. In practice this would only be done by sneaky characters.

If two seperated strands are used they represent a fence that can be seen through but cannot be passed through.

If something more solid is used then it represents a fence or wall* that cannot be seen through or passed through.

Due to the accepted manners, beliefs or whatever of the people in the lands certain conventions are generally always used. No one would enter another faction's area except by the main gate. To do otherwise would mean that the character is up to no good. Furthermore, if there is no gate guard a character would loudly seek permission to enter a faction area and if they got no reply would assume no one is there. Out of character, if they got no reply and they could see people they should check to see if the folk are in or out of character. Further, if it is early in the morning they should be wary of waking those who need to sleep. 9 am is the time when they can start demanding IC notice! Not before although some factions may be up and functioning IC before this time.

*Most of the year the i.c Mayfest site is a grazing field so no walls would be there. For a faction to build a wall just for the event would be unusual and they will have to convince the referees before their boundry can be deemed a wall.
