The Discovered History of the Lands

Way, way back in time, the lands were ruled by dragons. They had achieved a great civilisation and should have been content. Then they discovered magic and started to research and use it. Being creatures of great intelligence their magic soon shon like a beakon and started to attract great alien entities. Some of these were good and others not so.

Somehow the dragons gained warning of their coming and used their magics, and some say themselves to create entities known as the Greater Spirits.

After this for many eons wars raged for control of the lands until a balance was achieved. The worse of the alien entities were either killed, banished or imprisoned.

During this time the dragons had become few in number but many of the races had been created. The draconians and the lizard men were first, elves a dwarves next. Then came orcs, giants, trolls and goblins. Most of these had been created as servitor races to aid the great spirits.

After the war the dragons created the Fey race from pure magic. Their task was to hold and preserve the magic for when it was truely needed again. Only a little of it was to be made available for the races so that the skills in using it would never be forgotten.

After a period of peace came a great war between the Fomor races and the rest. Chief on the Fomor side were the Orcs, Trolls, Goblins, Drow and Duergar. The Elves, Dwarves and Halfling races banded together and called themselves the free races. During this time humans started to appear. To this day none has found out who created them or where they came from.

The freedom wars raged for hundreds of years with neither side gaining the upper hand until two things happened. The humans joined the brotherhood of the Free Races and the Drow and Duegar went to war with each other. Soon after this the Free Races won the wars and drove their enemies into barren places or underground.

Not counting the odd wars between nations, a period of world peace has lasted a few thousand years.

Now though, the bonds holding the imprisoned Great Ones are weakening, their minions are once again walking the lands and new evil cults are starting to spring up to support them. It is to the peoples to prevent their awakening. Already the Fey are preparing and the Greater Spirits who have guided and cared for the races are preparing.

Current Localish Information

The relm known as the Mayfest lands is a shadow, or copy, of ours. Indeed people have passed from one to the other. It's point in our history would be around the post Roman era of the British Isles.

Some big differences in History: American Indian tribes discovered Europe - In fact they first discovered Greenland then Ireland and were told about the rest! Australia was inhabited by just the Aborigonal peoples until a number of people from modern times got thrown by some strange storm back through time and across into the Mayfest realm. These it would seem have evolved a strange culture indeed. In britain the Romans were quickly absorbed and most of them left again but evidence of their culture can still be found.

Places have sometimes similar names. France is Lyonesse. Wales is The Dragon Lands. Ireland is Erseland and Scotland is Pictland. Greenland and the lands around the Baltic Sea are known as Viking Lands. Spain and North west Africa are known as The Lands of the Moors.

Even more locally, much of the Sout West peninsula of Britain is now Cornovii and under the control of King Flint. Angles and Saxons have settled on the Western coasts of Enge Land and enjoy a mainly peaceful relationship with the Celts there. Most of Enge Land is inhabited by Celts and Elves with many hilly areas occupied by Dwarves. Underground are Drow, Duergar and who knows what else.

Since Mayfest takes place in what we call North Devon, the maps so far posted show this area in some detail.
